5 risk factors for macular degeneration:
Macular degeneration is one of the leading causes of vision loss. This condition is when the central tissue of the retina no longer works and causes central vision loss. Central vision loss is what we use to read, recognize people, and to drive. Listed below are 5 risk factors to be aware of. The best way to prevent macular degeneration if you have one or more of these risk factors is to have your eyes examined by your Optometrist yearly.
1. Age:
Those who are over the age of 60 are at higher risk of developing signs of macular degeneration.
2. Race:
People who are of European descent, with blue eyes and light skin, are more susceptible to macular degeneration.
3. Family History:
If anyone in your close family, like parents, siblings, and grandparents have the condition, then you are more likely to get it as well. So ask your family members their eye history! It is so important.
4. Smoking:
We all know its bad for you, but especially bad when it comes to your eyes. Those who smoke are more likely to develop macular degeneration. But the good news is, this is one risk factor that can be controlled!
5. Excess Sun Exposure:
Speaking of controlled risk factor, the amount of sun, or more specifically the amount of UV light, can be prevented by wearing sunglasses and good protection, like a hat.
